SQT {15} : Turnips and Other Heavy Stuff

It’s seven quick take time!

-1- Turnips

survival-garden

A couple days ago, David harvested everything from the garden.  Can you see the enormous turnips in the wagon?!?! Yesterday I conquered them.  I think we got the seeds for free, which is the only explanation why anyone would plant turnips.  Unless it’s the zombie apocalypse, ain’t nobody eating turnips.  All the squirrels will have to be dead before people turn to turnips.   Just saying.

David likes the idea of turnips as a potato replacement, since we don’t really eat white potatoes anymore.  In reality, they just aren’t the same.  I boiled a bunch and made some roasted Cajun turnips for David.  Our house still smells like turnips.

-2- Remembrance Day

remembering

I was finally brave enough to share a little bit of our journey in honor of the October 15th Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day.  It’s a link-up, so if you have a story or resources to share, please visit the post and contribute.

 -3- Write 31 Days

happiness

It’s gone so-so, this trying to write for 31 days about happiness.  I’ve missed a few days recently because the kids got sick.  My last post on happiness explains it pretty well, but we’re nervous about how Cee’s arthritis will react.

Under the advice of her rheumatologist, we opted to hold one of her arthritis medications in order to let her immune system fight this.   We hope it doesn’t cause everything to fall apart with her health.  But now Elle is feeling super-sick as well.  Any prayers for our struggling family would be appreciated.

Happiness has certainly needed to be intentional this month with my grandma passing away, the kids getting sick, and working up enough courage to share our story of loss.  And we’re just at the beginning of the month!  Here are some oldie but goodie pictures that make me smile, since I lack the brain power for actual thoughts on happiness.

-4- Reading Cee

The Bookworm

I love that Cee loves to read.  We have a hard time keeping her in books, which is a pretty sweet problem for a parent.  Any chapter book recommendations are much appreciated, especially as she spends more time on the couch now.

-5- Elle.  Being Elle.

Kitten Love

Oh, does this picture make me smile!  She is such a caring, sweet girl (whether or not her subjects need or want the attention).

6- Moe the Cactus

Cactus Moe

Moe growls way more than the girls ever did…  But then again he also leaps, runs, climbs, and destroys more than the girls ever did.  Guess that comes with being a tornado…

-7-  The Bubs

Bonnet

Could either this baby or her bonnet be any cuter?  I didn’t think so. 🙂

Bonus:  Could this guy or his grill be any cuter?  I didn’t think so.

Grilling Shrimp

This is a good life.  Even when it’s hard.  Even when happiness takes conscious effort.

Speaking of happy, please follow along via facebookbloglovin, or email subscription (above).  🙂

Those turnips are enormous. Those are the kind I would look at in the grocery store and think, “These were obviously injected with growth hormones.” You must have a green thumb.

“Survival of the Fittest” gardening must be good for turnips. 🙂

That is a LOT of turnips!!! I tried turnips once and… decided to skip them after that 😉

I keep meaning to write a post with suggestions for chapter books for girls – Cecilia blazes through chapter books as well, and I have a tough time keeping up with her! What kind of books does Cee like best? John Paul and Cecilia are both very “realistic fiction, preferably fictionalized nonfiction” fans, which kills me because I’m such a fantasy nerd! But I know it’s also a developmental stage, so I’m not pushing 😉

    Current favorites:

B is for Betsy (and all in that series)
Betsy-Tacy (again, the whole series although I haven’t gotten the ones where Betsy’s in high school…)
The Moffats & any Eleanor Estes books
Edward Eager books (fantasy, but still fairly realistic)
    The Railway Children
    The Latsch Valley Farm series
    Little House
    Anything Beverly Cleary

So many great recommendations! She’s gone through The Moffats, The Little House, Beverly Cleary, and the Railway Children. All those were thumbs ups from her, so you have good taste. I’ll add the others to our holds list at the library. 🙂

So sorry about your grandma, Alicia! Prayers for you all.
And that baby + bonnet combo is adorable!! Also, wow, those turnips are huge! My grandpa used to make mashed turnips for Thanksgiving but that’s the extent of my turnip experience. 🙂 Would pureeing them maybe make them more pleasant to eat?

We’ll see what we can do with those turnips…

      Thanks for your prayers.
