Easy Grammar Systems Review

,

We’re starting our grammar game strong this year with Easy Grammar:  Grade 3  from Easy Grammar Systems  as part of the Homeschool Review Crew.

About the Curriculum

Easy Grammar Systems offers three different programs at various levels:

  • Easy Grammar:  This program teaches grammatical concepts for students in grades 1-6.
  • Daily GRAMS:  This program offers short, daily reviews for students in grades 3-7.
  • Easy Grammar Ultimate Series:  Similar in format to Daily GRAMS, but for students in grades 8-12.

A Surprise Endorsement

At the very beginning of the review period I was able to attend a mom’s night out homeschool book show and tell. We were sitting around talking favorite curriculum. One mom (who has already graduated one child!) said over the years she’s tried many grammar programs, but she’s settled on Easy Grammar as her favorite for teaching.

She talked about how quick, easy, and thorough the program was.

As I sat there making mental notes about new curricula to investigate, I put Easy Grammar at the top of my list.

I was driving home before I realized I had just received a copy to review. The timing was perfect!

How it Worked for Us

With lessons designed to teach and offer practice for grammatical concepts, the daily investment with Easy Grammar is ten minutes or less.

I have yet to meet a student who love-loves grammar, so something quick and free of fluff is important in our house. Easy Grammar is filled with bite-sized chunks of content.

Organized with the answers and the blank workbook page facing each other, I didn’t just hand the Easy Grammar: Grade 3 book to Elle.

Not having to flip back and forth between a teacher’s guide and a student book was convenient. I liked having the answers and the student page right next to each other.

Families do have the rights to copy the student pages for multiple children in the family. We did some lessons on a whiteboard and some lessons with copied pages. I even used some pages as a review for Cee in sixth grade.

Grade 3 starts out by having students memorize the prepositions, because if students can identify the prepositional phrases in sentences they can more easily identify the subject and verb.

I appreciated the logical flow topic-wise: prepositions, verbs, nouns, adjectives, all the way to units on capitalization, punctuation, and writing sentences.

There was a review and a test for each unit. Here’s a copy of Elle’s Capitalization Test.

And a copy of some of Cee’s practice with punctuation today.

While neither Cee nor Elle was super excited about doing their Easy Grammar work, they also didn’t complain as much as they have about other programs we’ve tried.

With the way practice is followed by a review and then a test, it was also easy to assess their understanding and progress. Not having to create the assessments myself was great.

The name really says it all. Easy Grammar Systems offers a simple, well-laid out plan for teaching grammatical concepts with the Easy Grammar program. At 500+ pages, families have plenty of opportunity for practice and assessment. Just like the tagline on the front cover says, it’s definitely, “Easy to teach…easy to learn…easy to remember!”
