MSB {20}: Adventures of Captain Surly and The Nanny Duck

My (Saturday Night) Sunday Best!

We visited another parish this week for Mass on Saturday night, and Moe fell asleep on the 40ish minute drive there.  That meant he was still waking up during most of Mass.  He wakes up hard.  And slowly.  So although he looked surly, he was quiet and still for almost all of Mass.  I’ll put up with angry eyebrows for hours if it means sitting still through Mass.  Win!

The Bubs perfected a new noise.  (It’s sort of like if Fran Drescher and the AFLAC duck had a baby.)  Her goal for Mass seemed to be to chew/shred all the lovely new 2017 hymnals and missals.  She lulled me into a false sense of security by opening the hymnals and “singing” softly in the most angelic baby voice.  Then she’d either pitch it or start ripping when I wasn’t looking.  When I rescued a book from her rip-happy hands, that’s when The Nanny Duck came out.

Aside from a bit of The Nanny Duck and Captain Surly, Mass was actually pretty much a win as far as kid behavior goes.  This parish also happened to have a designated spot for wheelchairs.  So the evening was full of wins.

The highlight was attending the baptism of a sweet-cheeked baby after Mass.  The kids’ behavior went way, way downhill during that part, but I was so exited about all the original sin washing and chrism anointing that I didn’t lose my mind.  Even when Moe clomp, clomp, clomped across the pews in his cowboy boots.  He was out of reach, and I couldn’t shoot mom laser daggers out of my eyes at him.  So…the clomping happened.

(David mentioned that we’ve never been to a baptism where we haven’t been embarrassed by our kids’ behavior, though, so at least we’re consistent?)

All in all it was great.  Doesn’t she have *the* sweetest cheeks ever?

On me:  Lularoe
On Sweet Cheeks:  Her mama’s baptismal gown and bonnet

What you can’t get from the picture is that amazing chrism smell that lingers on a newly baptized baby.  When my own kidlets were baptized we may have delayed baths for an inordinate amount of time in order to maintain that smell.

I’m torn about this stuff– chrism scented oil. I’ve heard it actually smells just like the baptism stuff.  On the one hand I looooove the smell.  On the other hand part of its specialness is that it comes only with baptism.  So I kind of want to buy it and wear it instead of (is it “instead of” when it’s not replacing anything?) perfume, but that might be taking it a bit too far.

PS– Cee has been having a tough time.  Tomorrow is her monthly infusion, and we’re increasing her medication.  Although we are hopeful that the increased dose will help her finally get free of her flare, we are nervous for all the possible side effects of the increase.  We are beyond grateful for the medical advances that keep Cee alive, but that doesn’t make us hate the super medications any less.  If you could say a prayer that everything goes well on Monday, we’d really appreciate it.

It must’ve been a LLR kind of day, since that is also what I wore to church. And, no shame in recycling the wardrobe! I went through a “no pants allowed, only skirts” phase (going to do it for Lent again this year), so I have a bunch of skirts (partly because we were also moving in the midst, so I let the movers kind of take a little too much, and needed something as I lost baby weight, but also wore only skirts/dresses). So, I am still recycling through those – they have become my Sunday wardrobe. Until they become my daily wardrobe again during Lent!

    Yikes.

But, I digress. I will continue to keep your family in prayers, and be sure to make yourself happy with your wardrobe as you go through these trying medical times. You are correct – the miracles of modern medicine can be a double-edged sword, but I pray that your daughter’s side effects of the medication increase are minimal.

What a sweet sweet baby ??? We’ve also never *not* been embarrassed by our kids’ behavior at a baptism. . Solidarity!

And many prayers for Cee and the whole family, of course.
