What’s saving me right now…

Modern Mrs. Darcy is hosting a linkup in honor of the doldrums of winter.  The idea is to share what’s helping us all survive this season.

What’s saving me right now…

These Words

A Gentle Mother’s post this week, Enjoy Every Moment, inspired all the heart emojis.  If you’re not following Christina, you should be.  Every post offers pause, reflection, and encouragement like a lovely cup of mothering tea.

After this latest cup, I realized that this is the most popular I’m going to be in my entire life. No time before this or after this will anyone ever want to sit by me, talk to me, or do things with me to the extent they do today. It can be tiresome, but I asked for this life of fame and fortune and wouldn’t have it any other way. 🙂

Christina’s words gave me re-encouragement to enjoy as much as possible and not dwell on the moments when I find unidentifiable messes in the closet or Moe cuts up another pair of pants with his newfound scissors skills (while I’m sitting next to him at the table!).

Peanut Butter Whip is magical.

On days we just. can’t. get. anything. accomplished. (We might just call that “Tuesday” around here.)  I like to open up a mystery from Mystery Science and reboot the excitement for learning.

Mystery Science (which David giggles at each time I mention it, because he thinks of Mystery Science Theater, no relation), is an open-and-go science program designed to inspire curiosity.  Each topic opens with a mystery which is investigated and culminates in an easy but meaningful experiment.  (We’ve only done a couple, but I can see how they would enhance students’ learning and curiosity.)

My kids love The Magic School Bus books and movies, so they already think that science is fun.  This goes a step beyond Ms. Frizzle content-wise, but even our almost four-year-old sits through the lessons just fine.  Each mystery lists a target age range (from 5-7 or 9-12), but we just watch ’em all.  (There are fleeting mentions of evolution or climate change, FYI if that stresses you out, but it hasn’t ever been bothersome to us.)

Mystery Science offers a free trial for homeschoolers and teachers.  We took advantage of the offer and are working through the videos.  When our free year ends in June, I am strongly considering purchasing a membership.  Free memberships include all content created before 2016, and new mysteries continue to be released.

This Girl

Elle keeps life from being dull.  This tutu inspired her to create a flamingo costume for herself.  She colored and cut out the beak and found clothes to complete her ensemble.  Elle makes winter bearable.

You’ll notice Bea sitting on the table in the background.  To keep Moe and Bea busy, I gave them a bag of dry black beans and various bowls and measuring cups.  The beans ended up everywhere, but both littles were occupied quietly for a good 15 minutes.  That’s been more than worth finding black beans all over the house for the past week.

These Leggings

They are so cheerful!  Lularoe has become my 2nd favorite clothes source after Lands’ End.  I’m going to host an online pop-up at the end of the month, and you’re welcome to join the party.  It’s a perfect way to brighten up these last few weeks of winter.

What’s been keeping you afloat?

I, too, have lately been meditating on this, my peak of “popularity.” I look at my parents and in-laws and see how desperate grandparents become ever to have all their children in one place and time. Families develop factions and fighting, people are busy, and it’s so rare to have everyone together. In contrast, right now, I have everyone together all the time, nearly 24/7, and often hitting each other to be on my lap at the same time. Someday, I will really miss this!

I’m not even going to click on a recipe called Peanut Butter Whip because I really don’t need anything else delicious helping me to pack on pounds during this pregnancy.

This is such a great post! Very much in line with finding things to be thankful for – this post reminds me there are times we need to recognize and appreciate what is keeping us sane.

I will need to figure out what is saving me right now… I think my faith is (trying to learn the art of “offering it up” – which I think is helping me change my perspective on things). But, aside from that, I will need to think about this more!

    Thanks for stoking my thoughts!

I’m seeing this “What’s Saving Me Right Now” making the rounds on a number of blogs I follow. What a great idea! I think we all need an excuse to step back and reflect, take stock of our blessings, and take a moment to be gracious. Like you said, it can be people who makes us laugh and make our hearts full. But it can also be a delicious recipe! Count those blessings, large AND small! haha

Yes! In the Midwest winter can drag on and on. It’s nice to stop and be grateful for all the little lovely things. 🙂
