Teachers, Need Continuing Ed? Try this!

,

In my old life I was a teacher.

Alicia

Man, I love teacher vests.  And apple mugs.  And the smell of new pencils.  …And kids and learning, of course.  But mostly the vests and crayons.  Just kidding.  Maybe.

At any rate, my teaching license expires next year, and I’ve been on the fence about keeping it or letting it go.  I asked some other homeschool moms for advice, and overwhelmingly their thoughts can be summed up with the following:

“You worked so hard for your degree, why let it go to waste?  You never know when you might need it.”

I guess that’s true.  David and I have talked about the potential of substitute teaching if something happened to him.  As someone who deals with unexpected loss on a daily basis, it’s important to David to keep our options open.

Maybe it’s coincidence, but amidst all the stewing I just received a “we miss you” email from Learners Edge with a discount off my next course.  A three-credit course regularly costs $399.   I know.  That’s part of the stewing.  In all my checking around, it’s pretty reasonable for 3 credits from a college.  With the discount…

My interest was piqued.  I decided to at least look around the website since it’s been a few years since I last took one of their courses.

One of my favorites was Gender Matters: How Boys and Girls Learn.  I still have the textbook, so now that Moe is getting older, I’m going to add it to my book basket to re-read.  I need all the help I can get.

I’ve taken 4 courses from  Learners Edge over the years.  According to my research and experience, Learners Edge has offered the highest quality classes at the lowest cost.  The material was interesting, but not difficult.  The assignments were applicable to teaching and not just busy work.  It’s self-paced and easy to submit work online or by mail.

I saw on the website that current customers can offer a “referral discount” to new customers of $20!  That means if you use this link to purchase a 3 credit course  and use the code FRIEND20, you can get $20 off!*

Even though I’m not currently in a traditional classroom, there are many appealing classes.  Ultimately I decided on Clearing the Hurdles of Writing Instruction.  I can’t wait to dive in and learn things to help my little students improve their writing!

Doesn’t this book look awesome?  I wish it came with boxing gloves.  And a vest.  But I digress…

If you know a teacher who is in need of continuing education transcripted credits (Augustana University is one of the many schools from which to earn the credit), feel free to pass along the link (http://mbsy.co/fBgV7)  and discount code.

*It works out nicely because I receive credit for anyone who uses the referral link, and they receive $20 off!

Ooh that’s interesting… My license expires next summer I think, but I was planning on letting it lapse. Maaaaybe I’ll keep it current?

Mine expires next summer, too, so I’ve got some catching up to do if I want enough credit. I was leaning towards letting it lapse, but if I needed a job tomorrow, it would be a lifesaver. That’s what made up my mind. I’d love to hear what you decide. 🙂
