SQT {11}: Wacko Wisdom, A Sermon Vitamin, and The Zelie Group

Seven Quick Takes of Randomness!

1- Wacko Wisdom

Moe Gloves
Classic Moe.  He’s since lost the gloves and switched to socks.

We’ve never actually started a list of the crazy things that we say as parents.   We should.  Usually it’s some sort of “wisdom” said with a straight face that we laugh about later.

“Actually, it’s considered impolite to eat your soup with fingers.”
“You can’t go outside without pants.”
“What’s in the salad spinner?  Laundry?  Okay, I guess.”
“Walls are not for licking,” I told one child in a public building.  Public.

Where do they get these crazy impulses?

Jenny’s list of 20 Things Motherhood Has Forced Me to Say made my week.

-2- Naked Faces

I appreciated this article about Alicia Keys’ decision to stop wearing makeup.

“But the truth is … I was really starting to feel like that — that, as I am, I was not good enough for the world to see.  This started manifesting on many levels, and it was not healthy.”

Whatever your position on makeup, it’s worth reading.  Keys is beautiful with or without makeup, but that’s sort of the whole point.  It doesn’t matter what *Ithink about her.  It matters what *she* thinks about herself.

-3- Journals!

Amy has compiled a list of some awesome journals.  Is there a discount if you buy them all?!?!  It’s be hard for me to choose which one I like the best…

As an introvert I like the idea of tandem journaling- – going through the same journal as a friend or group of friends and then meeting regularly to talk about the highlights.  Sort of a journaling accountability group.  Any takers?

-4- A Sermon Vitamin

Bonnie shared a link to a sermon on facebook.  She recommends some interesting reads, so I opened it and left it up on my computer.  But it was called a “sermon,” so I couldn’t bring myself to actually read it for awhile.  Just being honest.

I like funny and/or thought-provoking reads.  I’m not really into being preached at.  Who is?  Eventually I convinced myself that it would be like a little “sermon vitamin” and read it.

To my surprise, it wasn’t preachy.  I actually read the whole thing.  More than once.  I made David read it, too.  And we’re going to set a time to dive into the challenges it raises.  For real.  Although there’s some Catholic language, the idea is universal.  (That’s supposed to be a pun.)

-5- Judging Parents

In the creek

Why Do We Judge Parents For Putting Kids At Perceived — But Unreal — Risk?  — The title says it all for this article.

“For example, eight times more children are killed in parking lots than in parked cars.  But when a parent with a child in tow runs into the grocery store for a few minutes, he or she has to choose between allowing the child to wait in the car, which is safer but might get her arrested or jailed and/or her child taken away — and the more dangerous option of bringing the child with her because this is socially approved.”

This is a long-ish article, but as a self-labeled anxious free-range parent I appreciate the questions it raises about real and perceived danger that go beyond leaving kids unattended.  Is it okay that my kids were playing in a creek?  Or is it just asking for E. coli?

-6- Dia Deal

sunny flowerIf you’ve been thinking about trying Dia & Co. (a plus size styling box), now’s the time. If you use this link before Labor Day, you can receive $20 credit on your first box.

Feel free to pass the link along to anyone who might love to feel good about trying new clothes. 🙂

If you’re interested in more details about how it works, here’s the scoop.

I know, I know.  I keep bringing it up.  But shifting how I think about clothes has been so freeing.  I want to share that with ev’body!

-7- The Zelie Group

The-Zelie-GroupThe Zelie Group is a handful of bloggers who are committed to “cultivating little flowers in a rocky world.”

Zelie Martin was the mother of St. Therese of Lisieux.  She actually raised “The Little Flower.”  Whoa.  Are you as in awe of that as I am?!?!  Rather than being intimidated though, I am inspired by this simple French woman.

In order to build community, those in the Zelie Group are beginning a weekly link up called “Just Enough Info.”  The hope is that we can get to know one another better and be supportive as we live out our vocations as mothers.

The link up is open until Wednesday, and a new one will begin Thursday.  Check it out! We’d love for you to be part of this community.  🙂

For more quick takes, you can visit Kelly.  She has an awesome series going about parenting children with special needs.  I can’t wait to dive into her latest post How Can We Keep Our Faith When Bad Things Happen To Our Children?  That’s the million dollar question.

If this is your first time stopping by, hello!  Be sure to follow along via facebook, bloglovin, or email subscription (above).  Have a lovely weekend!  🙂

I can’t wait for the day when I can just send my oldest into the store for something while I sit in the car with the other kids – he’s only 7 so I think it would be frowned upon right now, but he’s so ridiculously scrupulous and responsible that I would trust him to do it correctly now! Because trying to get a trillion kids through a parking lot without any of them dying is a daunting task…

Fortunately we live in an area that’s mostly governed by common sense, so running in to the post office or the grocery store with the kids in the car (as long as it isn’t hot) is fine. I never thought of sending in one of the kids…that’s a good idea. 🙂

Jenny’s post definitely makes me feel like I should be keeping a record of things I say to my child. Since he’s only 2 months old, I haven’t said too many weird things yet, but I’m sure it will happen soon enough 😉

I love that picture of your kids playing in the creek! They are so cute 🙂 And I think it’s really neat that you and some of the other ladies started up the Zelie Group! I hope to join in one of the link-ups eventually. Have you read “A Call to a Deeper Love”? That book really made St. Zelie come alive for me.

Thanks for stopping by! It would be great if you’d link up this Thursday. The topic is “Back to School” if you want to get your wheels turning. 🙂

No, I haven’t read “A Call to a Deeper Love.” I’m looking for a good spiritual read, so I’ll have to check it out!
