SQT {10}: Domestic Graffiti, Bonk Beds, and Moe the Cactus

,

-1-  Bea’s B-Day

Our baby is one!

Bea Day

We went with a fruit theme, so instead of party hats the kids made fruit headbands.  Elle decided to make Bea’s headband using two kiwis, so it looks like a bow in the picture above.  Adorable!

-2- Moe the Cactus

Watermelon Elle
Elle decided to coordinate her headband and her shirt.

The girls asked Moe what his favorite fruit was, and he said “cactus.”  After conferring, we decided that while cacti are not fruit, they are pretty indicative of Moe’s personality.  Thus, Elle made Moe a cactus.

Cactus Moe
Sorry about the see-food. Moe was growling through his carrot.

Cherry Cee
Cee was more thrilled than she looks to participate in the fruit festivities.

-3- A Date!

It’s been too, too long since David and I escaped from the zoo.  This week we were able to have lunch together.  At a place not our home.  Without any children.

It was weird.

It was nice.

Hopefully it can happen again sometime again before the year is up.

-4- Bonk Beds

The kids think that bunk beds are called “bonk beds” because they can result in “bonks” if you sit up or stand on the bed.  It’s so reasonable that I haven’t corrected them.

We found a bonk bed at a thrift store and scooped it up.  We’ve called about several on craigslist in the past few months, but they disappear so quickly!  Apparently the secondary market for bonk beds is tight.

So far there have been no trips to the emergency room or even minor injuries, so that means neither David nor I won the bet.

-5- Domestic Graffiti

While we had the furniture out of the room anyway, we decided it was time to say goodbye to the graffiti.

The Wall

Oh, man.  This is a wall from the kids’ room.  It’s got dings.  It’s got dents.  It’s got several kids’ worth of pencil and pen.  It’s behind the door, so it’s not as obvious as the coloring on the other wall in their room.

I didn’t realize it was going to be hard to paint over Elle’s (slightly misspelled) name in green crayon, but it was.  There was a time she couldn’t quite spell her name.  Oh, my heart.

We touched up (a fancy way of saying “are too lazy to paint the whole room”) the graffiti and practically threatened death to anyone who writes on it again.  We’ll see how much the threat of capital punishment deters future crime.

-6- A Dia Deal!

Dia Package!

Okay, so I’ve talked a lot about my experience with Dia & Co., a plus-sized styling service that works similar to Stitch Fix.  Well– from now until Labor Day, if you use this link for your first Dia purchase, you can receive $20 credit!  I’ve never seen that deal until now.  The styling fee is $20, so it’s practically like trying it for free.

-7- Socks:  They aren’t just for feet anymore

David wears socks all the time.  I am barefoot all the time.  Barefootedness must be a dominant gene, because the kids don’t really wear socks, especially in the summer.  But for some reason, I’m still washing a million socks with each load of laundry.  I don’t get it.

Actually, I do get it.  If we find a sock on the floor, we assume it’s dirty, and it’s shuffled off to the laundry.  However “dirty” is not the same as “has been worn.”  My kids use their socks as thumbless mittens in their imaginary play.  A fancy dress is not complete without elbow socks gloves.  Moe can’t be a firefighter or a garbage man without work socks gloves.

Don’t get me started on all the treasures I’ve found stuffed inside socks.  They are perfect for Barbie luggage, hiding things from grabby siblings, and starting collections.

Is there a business idea in there?  Should I be going onto Shark Tank with my new kid sock toy?  There have been so many parenting products I’ve heard of and thought, “Why didn’t I think of that!”  Am I missing an opportunity here?

Happy birthday Bea!!! What a sweet picture of her. A lunch date?! How did you manage that? Did you find anything to talk about or was the concept so unfamiliar you just sat in awe of being on a date with your husband?

Haha! Even the quiet moments were a lovely change. 🙂

We have been trying to buy a bonk bed too and they go so quickly! Last weekend, my husband was at Costco where a woman and her mother were shopping. The grandmother was standing guard by the last floor model of a $1,500 bunk bed going for $400, and the mother was getting the wrench from the staff to dismantle the thing right there, all by herself! Chris said he would have done it too, if he had gotten there minutes before!

Wow! Maybe we should go into the bunk bed business? Probably need some carpentry skills, though…

The exact same thing happens with socks here! Really it’s just the boys wearing socks to church, but sometimes the girls decide they have cold feet for 30 seconds or they need to wear socks for dress-up or… Any number of reasons that result in random socks all over the house! And now most of them just live, unsorted, in a bin of “mismatched” socks but I’m pretty sure 90% of them HAVE matches in that bin!

Thanks for the idea; I’m considering just having a family sock bin. 🙂
