Real Time Books Spring 2016

Here are the highlights of what we’ve been reading aloud (re-al? Get it?).  We love reading together, and I’m glad to have a blog to keep our reading lists all in one place now.  I’m not going to try to remember all the books we read this spring, so the list will just be from the last week or so moving forward.

Chapter Books:

Poppy by Avi
Poppy and Rye by Avi
Ereth’s Birthday by Avi
(The girls have greatly enjoyed the adventure of the Dimwood Forest books series by Avi)
Henry and the Clubhouse by Beverly Cleary (re-read)
Ribsy by Beverly Cleary (re-read)

Picture Books:

Strega Nona’s Gift by Tomie dePaola  (my kids <3 all things Strega Nona)
Erandi’s Braids and Adelita by Tomie dePaola (great for sneakily introducing Spanish)
The Pigeon Needs a Bath by Mo Willems (Moe’s had me read this about 20 times since we brought it home from the library.)
Listen to My Trumpet by Mo Willems (the kids crack up at the trumpet noises Piggie makes)

My ideas on reading aloud align pretty closely to Sarah at Amongst Lovely Things.  I want my kids to treasure our read aloud time and grow up to find joy in reading.  There’s no Plato or Tolstoy on our list.  Just wholesome-ish, fun picture and chapter books.  Hopefully that will mean they are able to tackle Plato and Tolstoy later.

I love book lists and recommendations, so feel free to pass on yours.  🙂

My girls love Mo Willems and the Strega Nona books, too. I haven’t heard of Avi- will have to look up those books!

I have to admit that it’s not just my kids who like the Pigeon/Piggie & Gerald books. I appreciate that I can get through them without falling asleep. 🙂
