Treasures from our Checkout Pile

This book is adorable!  The kids and I giggled all through it, and I liked having a “school” book that matched their experience.
The highlight for me was definitely the page showing the teacher directing all sorts of activities, the final image being of the teacher asleep in the rocking chair.  “Sometimes our teacher gets tired very easily.”  Ha!

Worth checking out or buying if you’re a homeschool family.

Having grown the same kind of butternut squash that “Bernice” is, my kids were extra amused by this cute tale of friendship.

Several book lists mention the chapter book Swallows and Amazons, so I picked it up.  Cee loves to read, but she definitely is guilty of judging books by their covers.  The cover of this one is so unassuming that I figured she wouldn’t go for it and decided to use it as a read aloud instead.

We’re only a couple chapters in, but the kids keep asking me to read more.  The vocabulary could be described as either old-fashioned or quaint depending on whether or not that’s your sort of thing.

Right now the kids in the book are planning their unsupervised-but-parent-approved sailing/camping trip.  It’s hard for me to wrap my head around, and I look forward to seeing how it turns out.

We might have to start a journal with the sailing lingo, though.

This is to show that I don’t only check out booklist books.  See?  This is me being flexible.

Moe picked this one out.  He thinks it’s great. (He also eats playdoh, so I’m not sure how trustworthy his palate for anything is.)

The dinosaur on the cover is fabric.  (Odd.)

Synopsis:  The only t-rex in a classroom of human children comes dressed like a superhero for career day.  And everyone is fine with it.

Plot holes:  Why doesn’t the t-rex eat the children?
Where are all the other dinosaurs?
Since when is superhero-ing a career option?
Does anyone actually spell “roar” R-A-W-R?  So many questions, so little literary value.

I recently compiled a list of books in Evernote to check out, starting with Carrots for Michaelmas’s post about picture books you won’t hate (and the corresponding comments) and we’ve been slowly adding to it per recommendations from friends and trusted bloggers! Our current favorite is “The Seven Silly Eaters” by Mary Ann Hoberman.

Lately my strategy has been letting the preschooler pick out our books completely independently. She can’t read so I don’t know how she’s choosing one from another. But she likes it!
