JEI: Surviving Old Maid

,

Welcome to Just Enough Info (JEI).  The internets can be a great source of community, and I’d love to get to know you better!  Feel free to share your answers or a link to your own post in the comments.

What’s your favorite family movie and/or game?

For St. Nicholas’ Feast…or Christmas…I can’t remember which…the kids got this dice set to play Tenzi.  It’s super simple, and basically everyone plays independently.  Even the baby gets her own set of dice to play with while the rest of us play.

I want to look up more variations and things we can do now that we have 100 die.  Well.  99.  I think we lost a white one.  But that’s the easiest color as far as finding a replacement.

The kids would probably say Old Maid is their favorite, but it’s excruciating.  Moe (almost 4) insists on playing, but he shows everyone his cards and ALWAYS falls for the “put the Old Maid card higher than the others” trick.  Always.

It is hard to pick a favorite “family movie.”  I’m embarrassed to admit why.

David and I largely use “family movie time” to nap.  Saturday night after dinner, we put on a movie, cuddle up with the kids on the couch—- and promptly fall asleep.  Technically we’re spending time with the kids, but we get to catch up on missed sleep from earlier in the week.

Because of this, The Sound of Music is probably my favorite.

It’s a loooooooong movie.  And I legitimately enjoy it, so if by some miracle I don’t immediately fall asleep as my behind hits the couch, that’s fine.  It fills my heart with joy when my kids act out the cuckoo goodbye song.  If only we had some drapes to re-purpose, my life would be complete.

Otherwise Cee received the COMPLETE!!! set of Little House on the Prairie DVDs.  There are 48 disks in this set.   We’ve only made it through season two, so this will provide entertainment for years to come.  It’s great to both nap through and to watch.

Yes, we have the adorable house-shaped box, too!

FYI:  the DVDs do not just follow the book series precisely.  There’s a lot of extrapolating, but it’s still enjoyable.  I’m not sure why the “artistic license” taken with telling the Anne of Green Gables story made me irate, but I don’t mind it at all with Little House on the Prairie.  I’d be interested to know if anyone else feels the same way.

What’s your favorite family tradition or way to spend time as a family?

My favorite family tradition is our question jar.  You can see the old Vlasic pickle jar filled with questions on the table.  It’s prompted some interesting conversations, and it’s free!

As far as how we spend time as a family:  books, books, books.  We read books.  We listen to audiobooks.  We talk about books.  Some of us eat books.  Some of us fill notebooks with drawings of the what happens in books.  Some of us are always searching for missing library books.  Books are probably our #1 way to spend time together.

In general we try to make Saturday night our “family night.”  After dinner the games come out, or we watch a movie as a family.  When the weather cooperates, we take a little walk around the block.  Since we don’t have a lot of social obligations, Saturday is pretty protected without us having to put a lot of effort into it.
If you could travel anywhere with your family, where would it be?

Since our epic trip to Yellowstone in June, it’s become an actual possibility that our family could travel.  Before Yellowstone I always dismissed the thought of traveling with four littles.  Now we want to make it a priority to do some sort of family  vacation every year.  If we could travel anywhere, we’d love to go to Ireland or Italy.

We’ve done a staycation to Africa and Australia, and we’d like to hit Europe next since international travel isn’t in the works for the near future.

Your post left me with a HUGE smile on my face! This was a great read, and I adore how you use “The Sound of Music” for a little bit of down time – I might need to see if my 4 year old would like that one yet… ? Our go-to is either Zootopia, or the new favorite, Trolls.

Even better? My son gets so caught up in Trolls, he runs and “hides in [his] bunker,” which means he goes and shuts himself in his room to play. He even “saved” his sister for about 15 minutes a couple days ago… wish I had realized what they had done and made better use of the time! ?

Thank you for bringing a smile to my face – it has been needed after a very long, very sobering day in my house!
